Student field research assistant: vacancy #CAS1601

Center for Analytical Sciences at Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences (KIAS) is conducting a field sampling and testing of some drugs for their quality in Kathmandu and other districts of Nepal.

It is projected that 10-30% of the medications sold in developing countries are counterfeits. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the counterfeit medicine is a drug whose active pharmaceutical ingredient is either under dosed or completely absent. Such bad drugs can lead to therapeutic failure, drug resistance, and death. Unfortunately, it is not easy for customers to identify these fake medicines.

We are looking for three student volunteers for this important project. Student volunteers will work with a research team consisting of scientists from Nepal and USA. The work in this project involves travel to field sites (Kathmandu and outside Kathmandu) with the team, obtain selected drug samples, and test the samples using paper-based analytical devices (PADs). If you want to know more about PADs, click here.

Volunteers will have an opportunity to obtain experience on scientific research. We will cover all field travel related expenses.

Minimum requirements:

  • Three years college chemistry/pharmacy education
  • Interest in scientific research
  • Able to travel in and outside Kathmandu with team
  • Volunteer from 8-29 June (at least one week commitment)

If you are interested, please submit your application online by May 6.
